• [Kel 16:26] Dawn Of God’s Dear Sabbath, The

  The dawn of God’s dear Sabbath Breaks o’er the earth again, As some sweet summer morning After a night of pain; It comes as cooling showers To some exhausted land, As shade of clustered palm trees ’Mid weary wastes of sand. Lord, we would bring for offering Though marred with earthly soil, Our week of earnest labor, Of useful daily toil; Fair fruits of self denial, Of strong, deep love to Thee, Fostered by Thine own Spirit In our humility. And, we would bring our burden Of sinful thought and deed, In Thy pure presence kneeling, From bondage to be freed; Our heart’s most bitter sorrow For all Thy work undone; So many talents wasted! So few bright laurels won! And with that sorrow mingling, A steadfast faith, and sure, And love so deep and fervent, That tries to make it pure; In His dear presence finding The pardon that we need; And then the peace so lasting, Celestial peace indeed! So be it, Lord, forever; O may we evermore In Jesus’ holy presence His blessèd Name adore, Upon His peaceful Sabbath, Within His temple walls— Type of the stainless worship In Zion’s golden halls.

  What various hindrances we meet In coming to a mercy seat; Yet who that knows the worth of prayer, But wishes to be often there. Prayer makes the darkened cloud withdraw, Prayer climbs the ladder Jacob saw; Gives exercise to faith and love, Brings every blessing from above. Restraining prayer, we cease to fight; Prayer makes the Christian’s armor bright; And Satan trembles, when he sees The weakest saint upon his knees. While Moses stood with arms spread wide, Success was found on Israel’s side; But when through weariness they failed, That moment Amalek prevailed. Have you no words? Ah, think again, Words flow apace when you complain; And fill your fellow creature’s ear With the sad tale of all your care. Were half the breath thus vainly spent, To Heav’n in supplication sent; Your cheerful song would oft’ner be, “Hear what the Lord has done for me.”

• [Mat 20:21] Two Brothers Freely Cast Their Lot

  Two brothers freely cast their lot With David’s royal Son; The cost of conquest counting not, They deem the battle won. Brothers in heart, they hope to gain An undivided joy, That man may one with man remain, As boy was one with boy. Christ heard; and willed that James should fall First prey of Satan’s rage; John linger out his fellows all, And die in bloodless age. Now they join hands once more above Before the Conqueror’s throne! Thus God grants prayer; but in His love Makes times and ways His own. All glory to the Father be, All glory to the Son, All glory, Holy Ghost, to Thee While endless ages run.

• [Mat 20:22] Son Of God Goes Forth To War, The

  The Son of God goes forth to war, A kingly crown to gain; His blood red banner streams afar: Who follows in His train? Who best can drink his cup of woe, Triumphant over pain, Who patient bears his cross below, He follows in His train. That martyr first, whose eagle eye Could pierce beyond the grave; Who saw his Master in the sky, And called on Him to save. Like Him, with pardon on His tongue, In midst of mortal pain, He prayed for them that did the wrong: Who follows in His train? A glorious band, the chosen few On whom the Spirit came; Twelve valiant saints, their hope they knew, And mocked the cross and flame. They met the tyrant’s brandished steel, The lion’s gory mane; They bowed their heads the death to feel: Who follows in their train? A noble army, men and boys, The matron and the maid, Around the Savior’s throne rejoice, In robes of light arrayed. They climbed the steep ascent of Heav’n, Through peril, toil and pain; O God, to us may grace be given, To follow in their train.

• [Mat 20:23] Oh! What, If We Are Christ’s

  Oh! what, if we are Christ’s, Is earthly shame or loss? Bright shall the crown of glory be When we have borne the cross. Keen was the trial once, Bitter the cup of woe, When martyred saints, baptized in blood, Christ’s suffeirngs shared below: Bright is their glory now, Boundless their joy above, Where, on the bosom of their God, They rest in perfect love. Lord, may that grace be ours, Like them in faith to bear All that of sorrow, grief or pain May be our portion here. Enough if Thou at last The word of blessing give, And let us rest beneath Thy feet, Where saints and angels live. All glory, Lord, to Thee, Whom Heav’n and earth adore; To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, One God forevermore.

  Jesus, Jesus, full of all compassion, Hear Thy humble suppliant’s cry; Let me know Thy great salvation, See, I languish, faint and die. Guilty, but with heart relenting, Overwhelmed with helpless grief, Prostrate at Thy feet repining, Send, O send me quick relief. Whither should a wretch be flying, But to Him Who comfort gives? Whither, from the dread of dying, But to Him Who ever lives? While I view Thee, wounded, grieving, Breathless, on the cursèd tree, Fain, I’d feel my heart believing, That Thou sufferedst thus for me. With Thy righteousness and Spirit, I am more than angels blest; Heir with Thee, all things inherit, Peace, and joy, and endless rest. Saved! The deed shall spread new glory Through the shining realms above; Angels sing the pleasing story, All enraptured with Thy love.
